El Camotal surf guide

El Camotal is a lesser-known surf spot that sits beside a small reef near a buoy. It used to be connected to La Punta before a tsunami and earthquake shifted it away in 1746. While it’s not the most famous wave around, it can serve up some fun sessions for those willing to explore.

The waves at El Camotal can break both left and right, catering mostly to expert surfers. It's best to catch it with swells coming from the NorthWest, but it can also handle swells from the South. The spot works well with swell sizes around 4 ft (1.2 m). Be aware that the wave can get hollow at times, though wind exposure often leads to choppy conditions. The bottom consists of an uneven reef and some sand, which means you should be careful when paddling out. For a good session, aim for low to mid or even high tide with a southeast wind for the best wave quality.

Even though it’s not super crowded, El Camotal tends to attract surfers who are capable and ready to handle a bit of a challenge. Because it’s not heavily trafficked, you might find it less predictable, so keeping an eye on conditions is key. If you’re up for it, this spot can offer some decent waves when the conditions align.
