El Camotal is a small reef that breaks both left and right, sitting beside a buoy just offshore. It used to be part of the Punta until the tsunami and quake of 1746 shifted it out to sea. The wave can turn occasionally hollow, though wind exposure often leaves the face choppy.
When It Works
El Camotal draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), with northwest (NW) the best match. It works from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. Breaking over uneven reef and sand, it can be somewhat inconsistent, so it rewards patience when the setup lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southeast (SE) offshore wind to clean up the face. It can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an expert-level wave. Expect a fairly quiet lineup when it's on.
Access
It's possible to paddle out from la Punta, though that isn't recommended.
