Overview
El Hueco is a heavy, heaving barrel that hits the reef off the tip of the point at Lobitos, and it stands as one of Peru's best tubes. The wave breaks left over uneven reef and sand, with exposed rocks sitting close to the take-off in a way that recalls Cabo Blanco. Rides are usually short, though on the rare special day the wave links all the way through to Lobitos. Oil platforms sit on the horizon behind the lineup.
When It Works
It takes solid swell to switch this reef on. Swell arriving anywhere from south through west will do the job, with south swell the best match, and the wave is usable from 1.5 m / 5 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. Consistency is moderate, so the gaping pits do not turn up every day, but the payoff is worth watching the forecast for.
Wind and Tide
Look for southeast offshore wind. Low and mid tide are the windows to aim for, and a rising tide is generally the better call. The deepest, most cavernous barrels show up on negative tides.
Local Tips
This one is for experts only. You need a confident air-drop and the composure to stand tall in the tube from the first moment. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it works, and expect the surfers in it to be good. Currents can run through here as well, so factor that into where you sit and how you get back to the peak.
