El Porto Beach Surf Forecast Guide

El Porto Beach is a sand-bottomed beach break in the middle of Los Angeles' South Bay, throwing up several peaks with both lefts and rights along the sand. It isn't especially known for outstanding wave quality, and it closes out much of the time, but when spring sandbars or a crossed-up swell line up it can turn machine-like, with good barrels when it's firing. The trick is finding the zone with the "holes" the locals talk about, the gaps in the otherwise relentless closeouts.

When It Works

El Porto is a northwest swell magnet and is almost always bigger than anywhere else in the South Bay through the winter months. It draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW) and is usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, holding size from chest-high up to a few feet overhead. It's moderately consistent and comes into its own from autumn through winter into spring, roughly October to April. Paddling out is easy on the smaller days but becomes real work when it's pumping.

Wind and Tide

Look for east (E) offshore wind, and be ready for it to blow out easily. It can work across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is an intermediate wave that suits everything from shortboards and fish to funboards, longboards, and bodyboards. Expect a busy lineup when it's firing and a near-empty beach when it's not, and the crowd can feel a little reserved.

Access

Park in the lot at the bottom of 45th Street; parking is paid, so bring quarters for the meters. Restrooms, showers, and lifeguards are on hand. Water quality here is poor.
