El Quemao is a fast, pitching, hollow left that reels over a jagged lava reef in front of the village of La Santa, on the north shore of Lanzarote. Known across Europe as the Pipeline of the Canaries, its barrels can stand up to 10 feet, lunging out of deeper water onto a shallow slab to produce powerful, thick-lipped lefts and the occasional speeding right. The rights tend to close out like Backdoor, so the lefts are the prize. The water is a clear, Caribbean-like blue, and on its day this is an excellent wave.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from southwest through northwest (SW-NW), and a solid west (W) swell is the best match, pushing the lefts into their most makeable form. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, sizing up anywhere from waist-high to well overhead. Spring, autumn, and winter are the prime seasons.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southeast (SE) offshore wind to groom it clean. The wave comes to life on mid to high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an expert-only wave. It breaks fast and shallow over an ultra-sharp lava reef, so it rewards confident shortboarders and gun riders who can handle serious power. Paddling out isn't too bad, but you'll want solid skills once you're in the lineup. Expect it to get busy when it turns on, with a very friendly atmosphere among the crew who ride it.
Access
Getting in is simple, with the break sitting right in front of the harbour. There's a surf shop nearby, plus free roadside parking.
