El Zonte is a river mouth and rocky point in the sleepy town of the same name, a short drive from Sunzal. The main draw is a long, predictable right-hander that peels down the boulders, staying rippable when it's small and turning hollow as the swell builds. When it gets big enough, some sucky lefts open up on the other side of the bay. It carries a mellower feel than the other nearby breaks.
When It Works
The point draws swell from south to southwest, with southwest (SW) the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, and the rights get hollower toward the top of that range. Waves are consistent through spring, summer, and autumn, roughly March through October. As with most points, there's a bit of current to deal with.
Wind and Tide
Look for north (N) offshore wind. The right breaks best on mid to high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call, and the boulders start to show as the tide drops.
Local Tips
El Zonte suits intermediate surfers and handles a range of boards, from shortboards and fish to funboards and longboards. It's a well-known stop on El Salvador's right-hand point tour, so expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on. Plenty of local surfers are around, and they're generally welcoming. Watch for the rocks, and keep an eye on your gear, since petty theft can be an issue.
Access
Camping and surf schools have grown up around the town, making it easy to base yourself nearby and make the short paddle out. Parking is free, including roadside spots.
