Overview
Encuentro is a corner of reef at the western end of Cabarete beach, out past Sosua and not far east of Puerto Plata, in the windsurfing and kitesurfing capital of the Caribbean. The coast here is wide open to the tradewinds and dotted with offshore reefs, and Encuentro itself serves up a long left alongside a short, bowly right, with swell and wind direction deciding which one is the pick of the day. The coral bottom and nice Caribbean water round out a genuinely good setup.
When It Works
Swell reaches the reef from northwest through north to east-northeast (NW-N-ENE), and the spot works from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 2.7 m / 9 ft. Autumn through winter and into spring is the season, so plan around those months for the most reliable run of waves.
Wind and Tide
Look for north (N) offshore wind, though the workable wind window stretches all the way from west-southwest through north to southeast (WSW-N-SE), which leaves plenty of days in play. The reef can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Shortboards are the tool of choice, and Encuentro doubles as a popular kiteboarding spot. The stretch as a whole suits intermediates on up, but the peak at Coco Pipe is expert territory: the better rights ask for a heavy drop, a barrel, and a quick exit, which is exactly why it stays the quieter end of the reef. Come as a strong paddler regardless of where you sit. Crowds are usually fairly light, and the lineup runs a little reserved. Watch out for kiteboard lines in the water, since they carry real injury risk.
Access
Drive west out of Cabarete until the road turns to dirt, then park right off the beach in the palm grove.
