Overview
Etretat is a beach peak that breaks beneath the world-famous 'l'Aiguille Creuse' rock formation, the hollow needle. Waves peel over a mix of rock ledge and sand and throw both lefts and rights, though the lefts are the pick.
When It Works
The peak draws swell from west through north to northeast (W-N-NE), but wrapping southwest (SW) swell is the best match. It can also come to life on northeast windchop. Etretat is usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, giving a broad working range, and it tends to be somewhat inconsistent.
Wind and Tide
Look for south (S) offshore wind. Southwest winds blow cross-offshore, and the peak holds some shape even when onshores move in. It's best on mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers. Expect a busy lineup when it works, and a little localism is possible on crowded weekends. Keep an eye on the shallow inside and the fierce shore pound. There's a webcam to check it before you head down.
Access
Head to Etretat Beach. There's a car park with free parking plus roadside parking, though parking can be difficult. Restrooms and showers are on hand.
