Faja dos Cubres surf guide

Faja dos Cubres is a surf spot located on the beautiful island of São Jorge in the Azores, Portugal. This place offers a unique setting with stunning cliffs and rocky coastlines. It’s not the most mainstream surf spot, but it has its charm for those who seek something off the beaten path. The waves here can be powerful and demanding, making it more suitable for experienced surfers looking for a challenge.

The surf at Faja dos Cubres features a left point break that really shines when a Northwest swell rolls in. On good days, you can find long rides that stretch over boulders; however, it’s common for the waves to break closer to the rocks compared to other faja spots. It can handle swell sizes of about 1.5 meters (5 feet) and offers a broad swell window. The spot is best at low tide, although it can work during mid to high tide as well. Ideally, you want light Southwest winds for the best conditions. This wave can be heavy and powerful, especially when the three sections connect, but be ready to tackle some freight train sections and wide open barrels too, which can be exhilarating.

Getting in and out of the water requires some strategy; there can be significant currents and harsh whitewash from the waves. Timing the sets is crucial for a smoother entry, but be cautious on exit as it can get tricky with the rocks and swell. This spot really tests even the most skilled surfers with challenging conditions, and while it’s not for beginners, those who are up for it might find it rewarding.

Wind certainty

Wind certainty tells you how much the weather models agree on the forecast.

  • High certainty: Models agree closely; forecast is reliable.
  • Medium certainty: Some disagreement; conditions may shift slightly.
  • Low certainty: Models diverge; treat forecast with caution.

We calculate this by comparing wind speed, gust and direction from multiple models (like GFS, ECMWF, Arome, and Harmonie) and seeing how closely they match. They are weighted, meaning that some models count more than others, depending on how good they are for a certain spot.

Forecast Cheat Sheet

Short on time? Focus on wave energy. It’s the best single metric to gauge how big and powerful the waves will be.

Click any table cell to jump to that forecast hour. The map will update with forecast arrows, so you can see if wind and swell direction are lining up.

Use the table sidebar to switch units for height and speed.

Log your surf sessions to compare forecasts with real sessions and sharpen future predictions.

Models and Updates

Surfnerd blends multiple global and local wind and swell models using advanced interpolation and spatial techniques to create an "ensemble" forecast. Forecasts are refreshed hourly.

Surf Predictions

Our AI-driven algorithm scores surf quality, shown by green, orange, and gray dots. Each forecast hour is rated for wind, swell, and tide quality, then combined into an overall score. Here’s the scale:

Perfect
Good
Average
Bad or No Data

Session logs also feed the algorithm — the more you log, the smarter your forecasts get.
