Fakanakafo Bay surf guide

Fakanakafo Bay is located 61km from Auki and features several surf spots nearby, including Fouia and Atori. It offers a mix of a rivermouth peak and a long stretch of beachbreak, but be prepared for a decent hike to get there. This area is not super well-known, so don’t expect huge crowds.

The best conditions for surfing at Fakanakafo Bay come with a NorthEast swell direction, but it can also handle swells from the SouthEast. The waves typically break over dead coral, and you can catch both left and right waves here. The spot can deal with smaller waves starting from around 2ft (about 0.6 meters). If you’re an intermediate surfer, this can be a decent spot for you. The wind from the west is preferred, and you can surf the bay at various tide heights—low, mid, or high. However, keep in mind that the overall wave quality tends to be average, so manage your expectations.

For those planning to visit, you should know that the hike to reach the good spots can be a workout, so bring some water and snacks for the journey. The beach isn’t always the most pristine, but it offers a nice, laid-back vibe for surfers looking to explore a quieter option.
