Falmouth Surf Forecast Guide

Falmouth is a cluster of deep-shelter beachbreaks in Cornwall, spread across three beaches: Maenporth, Swanpool and Gyllyngvase. It rarely breaks, but there's more here than sand. Between Swanpool and Gyllyngvase sits a rocky protrusion known as Falmouth Reef, which can throw out long, walling rights, and there's a right-hand reef at the western end of Gyllyngvase too. The bottom is a mix of small sandy bays, rocks and a wide reef, and when it all lines up the setup earns a decent rating.

When It Works

This is a winter spot that needs big swells to wake up, and those tend to run from December through February. It draws swell from east through south to southwest (E-S-SW), with northwest (NW) the optimal direction. The beaches deliver both lefts and rights, and the working size range runs from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft.

Wind and Tide

Look for northwest (NW) offshore wind to clean things up. Falmouth works through the tides, across low, mid and high, though a rising tide is generally the better call.

Local Tips

The range of waves on offer suits beginners and intermediates, and just about any board fits the day, from shortboards and fish to funboards, longboards and bodyboards. Expect a fairly quiet lineup with a somewhat reserved atmosphere.

Access

Each of the three beaches has its own beachside car park, so parking is easy, though it's paid. Falmouth backs it up with full facilities nearby, including restrooms, lifeguard cover and a surf shop.
