Overview
Fão is a sandy beachbreak next to a little tourist village on the Portuguese coast, where a series of jetties keep the sandbars stable. That stability means a decent peak can normally be found somewhere along the beach, with waves peeling both left and right over sand.
When It Works
The beach picks up swell from southwest through northwest, with northwest (NW) swell the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, so it handles anything from small summer days to a solid winter pulse.
Wind and Tide
Look for east (E) wind, which blows offshore here. The banks can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a good spot for beginners, and crowds are not an issue, so finding your own peak is rarely a problem. Water quality is the main drawback: the small river unloading at the northern end of the beach brings pollution, so it can be worth staying away from that corner.
Access
There is a car park with free parking as well as roadside parking. The beach also has showers, camping, and a lifeguard.
