Overview
Ferrel is a long, consistent beach break backed by crumbly red sandstone cliffs, with golden sand running from Baleal northeast toward the Obidos Lagoon. The sandy bottom throws up both lefts and rights, and with so much beach to spread out along, there's almost always a bank working somewhere. Almagreira is one of the highlights, holding consistent banks that break through the tides.
When It Works
The beach draws swell from southwest through north (SW-N), with a northwest (NW) swell the best match. It's a genuine swell catcher that works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, so there's a rideable wave on offer across a wide range of sizes. Consistency is a real strength, though all that exposure means it blows out easily. It runs all year but is at its best from September to November.
Wind and Tide
Look for east (E) offshore wind to clean it up; any north in the wind quickly makes a mess of the banks. It works across low, mid, and high tide, with mid tide the pick and a rising tide generally the better call. Keep in mind the beach can disappear at high.
Local Tips
This is a beginner-friendly stretch that takes just about any board, from shortboards and fish to funboards, longboards, and bodyboards. Expect a fairly quiet, somewhat reserved lineup, and if a peak does get busy, walk up the beach to find one of the many others. Paddling is straightforward most of the time but gets heavy once the size picks up, and it can turn rippy when it's big.
Access
Getting in means rough piste roads that can be tricky after heavy rain, with parking in a free car park or on the cliff top and roadside. There are showers and a lifeguard on hand. The cliff access is prone to erosion, so it's wise not to leave valuables in the car.
