Overview
Fire Island is a 10-plus-mile sandbank lined with beachbreaks, only occasionally interrupted by groins. Waves peel both right and left over sand, and shifting bars keep it unpredictable: good one day, flat the next. When the bars line up, it can get genuinely fun.
When It Works
The beachbreaks draw swell from east through south to southwest (E-S-SW), with southeast the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, so there's room for everything from waist-high days to well-overhead sets. Autumn and winter are the prime months, roughly September through March.
Wind and Tide
Look for north-northeast (NNE) offshore wind, with a workable window running from northwest to north-northeast (NW-NNE). Mid tide is the call, and a rising tide is generally better.
Local Tips
This stretch suits just about everyone, from beginners to experts, and takes a wide range of boards: shortboard, fish, funboard, longboard, or bodyboard. Expect a fairly quiet, somewhat reserved lineup even when it's working.
Access
Getting to the water is on the more difficult side, and the surf can be powerful with rip currents to watch for. The environment is pretty clean overall.
