Fishermans Island surf guide

Fishermans Island is a unique surf spot located at the northern end of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. It's a small crescent of sand that features an extremely rare point-style left-hander. However, getting there can be a hassle since access is only possible by boat. There's no stopping or parking nearby, and beach access is limited, which means it’s primarily for the dedicated locals who know the area.

The surf at Fishermans Island works best with swell from the southeast to the east. It can handle swell sizes up to about 4 feet (1.2 meters). When the conditions are right, you can catch long, fast barreling walls that break over the sandy bottom. While the waves typically break right, they appeal to different levels of surfers depending on the tide. The waves can be surfed at low, mid, or high tide, although they tend to be more makeable with a bit of water. Northerly winds are ideal here for grooming the waves, making for a smoother ride.

Keep in mind that the surf can be pretty fickle, so it’s essential to check conditions before making the trip. Since the spot is not as crowded as others, you might find some quality waves if you’re willing to put in the effort to get there. Just make sure to respect the local surfers and the area.
