Florence - North Jetty is a sand-bottomed beachbreak just south of Heceta Head and its lighthouse. It sits where the Siuslaw River makes its final bend through the town of Florence and empties into the Pacific between massive rock jetties, at the northern edge of some 50 miles (80 km) of coastal sand dunes. The wave peels left, and Jetty Road leads you out to the north jetty.
When It Works
The North Jetty draws swell from southwest through north (SW-N), with northwest (NW) the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, and the sandbars stay fairly consistent. The standout sessions come on south-wind days when the swell is small, when the jetty can serve up excellent beachbreak surf.
Wind and Tide
Look for east (E) offshore wind to clean things up. The bank works on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a solid option for intermediate surfers. Expect a busy lineup when it works, and be aware that some die-hard locals treat the place as world-class and can be unfriendly. There are also moderate shark worries to keep in mind.
