Fortress is a boulder-reef break that throws up fun, walled-up sections. The swell wraps over a submerged reef of boulders and sand, and while it peels both ways, the rights are the pick of the two.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from east through south to southwest, and it comes to life best on a southeast (SE) swell. It's a consistent spot, so there are plenty of chances to score it. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, covering everything from small, playful days up to solid, chunkier surf.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest (NW) offshore wind to clean up the faces. The reef can be surfed through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers who are comfortable reading a reef and picking off the walled-up sections. Expect a busy lineup when it's on, often filled out by the local grommet crew, so paddle in ready to share the peak.
Access
There are solid facilities for the area, including restrooms, showers, and a lifeguard. Parking is paid and restricted, and the town car park fills up fast with permit holders, so access can take some patience.
