Francis Beach is an average beachbreak fronting the campground at Half Moon Bay State Beach, with peaks that break both left and right over sand. It sits on a fairly consistent stretch of coast, and when everything lines up, Francis Beach and the spots to the north can really turn on. Just as often, though, it ends up maxed-out or blown-out.
When It Works
Conditions are moderately consistent, and the break comes alive on small, clean, peaky swells. It picks up swell from south to north (S-N), with west (W) the direction that suits it best. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for east (E) offshore wind to clean it up. The break is best at high tide, and a rising tide is the better call.
Local Tips
This is a friendly spot for beginners. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working.
Access
There's a car park with paid parking, which helps keep the crowds down, plus restrooms and camping on site. As along the rest of the central coast, assume sharks and rip currents are always present.
