Freshwater Beach Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Freshwater Beach, also known as Harbord Beach, is a small protected cove with a good righthander at its southern end. It's the beach where the Duke first demonstrated surfing to the Australian public, and it still draws plenty of surfers today. The sand-bottomed banks peel both left and right, and the tucked-in setting offers some shelter from pesky sea breezes. It usually runs a touch smaller than nearby North Steyne and Curl Curl.

When It Works

The bank picks up swell from the northeast through east-southeast to south (NE-ESE-S), with an east swell the best match. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, and being a fairly consistent break, there's a decent chance of finding something rideable when the other beaches are firing.

Wind and Tide

Look for a northwest offshore wind to clean things up. The cove works across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is an approachable, beginner-friendly wave, but expect a busy lineup when it's on. The peak crowds out quickly and the locals can be protective of it, so read the pecking order before dropping in. There isn't a lot of room to spread out either. In summer, northeast winds can blow bluebottle jellyfish into the cove, so keep an eye on the water.

Access

There's a car park with free parking, along with paid and roadside options. Onshore you'll find restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, and a surf school.
