Gallows is a powerful sand-bottomed beach break that wedges up and throws out hard and thick, so it is not a spot to get hung up in the lip. Rights barrel back toward the rocks while lefts spin down the beach, and the guaranteed power draws the best stand-up surfers and bodyboarders. Water quality near the harbour can be iffy, though the old Poo Pier is now gone.
When It Works
Gallows draws swell from northeast through southeast (NE-SE) and works on most east swells, with east swell the best match. It stays consistent and is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northwest offshore wind. The bank can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide the better call.

This is an expert-only wave given the power and the way it throws. Expect a busy lineup when it turns on.
