Gas Chambers sits a bit further down the beach from Toilet Bowl at Pacific City, where the sand build-up inside the Cape eases off and stronger, larger waves can appear. It's a sand-bottomed beachbreak that peels both left and right, and it comes into its own for more experienced surfers when the mellower options go soft.
When It Works
The break draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), with southwest swell the best match. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft and tends to be moderately consistent. Smaller swells actually have an edge here, coming through with more punch and pitch, while bigger west swells can throw up heavy slab peaks as the size climbs.
Wind and Tide
Look for east offshore wind. It runs hollow at low tide and softens into mush at high, but still holds up as the pick for stronger surfers, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an intermediate wave, and you can expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on. If you want more options nearby, there's good beachbreak straight out from the bridge and further south in Robert W. Straub State Park. On south winds, try north of Cape Kiwanda toward Tierra Del Mar, where the beachbreak can be excellent and powerful with some wind protection.
Access
There's a car park with free parking, along with restrooms, showers, camping and a surf shop. Parking is limited, though, and typically fills by 10am on spring weekends and earlier in peak summer, so arrive early. Watch out for possible shark danger, and keep an eye out for jet skis and dory boats, which are both permitted to launch from the beach.
