Overview
Grand Ford is a long reef that throws fast, shallow right-handers over live fire coral, looking more like the Indian Ocean than the Atlantic. It's the first of many potentially excellent breaks along the coast before St Louis du Nord, and it draws serious surfers when the swell lines up.
When It Works
This is a right-hand reef that comes alive on high-period northeast swell. It picks up energy from northeast (NE) through east (E), with northeast (NE) the direction that lights it up best. The wave works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.5 m / 5 ft, so there's a usable window across small to head-high days. Consistency can be hit or miss, so it pays to keep an eye out for the right high-period pulse rather than expecting it to be on all the time.
Wind and Tide
Look for south (S) offshore wind to clean up the faces. The reef can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The fast, shallow rights over fire coral put this firmly in expert territory. The lineup stays quiet, so you're unlikely to be fighting for waves when it's breaking.
Access
Grand Ford sits about 2 km east of Anse à Foleur. Follow the paved road until it ends and becomes the mountain track toward Le Borgne, then park roadside right in front of the spot. The coast road runs west from here, which makes it easy to pull over and check the various reef passes along the way.
