Graveyard surf guide

Graveyard is a surf spot tucked inside the estuary of Yakutat, Alaska. It's part of the larger surf area known as the "Far North Shore," which gets its swells wrapping around Point Carrew. Surfing here isn’t for everyone since the local scene is pretty laid-back, with only about 30 regulars who often have boats to explore the surrounding islands. The spot can sometimes feel quiet, but the environment offers potential for those willing to look for it.

This beach mainly works best with SouthWest swells but can also handle South and West directions. Waves break over shifting sand, which keeps things changing. The setup generally favors lefts that can pack a punch, offering barrels for those who can ride them well. There’s also a small, steep right that doesn’t last long. The spot can handle swells from around 1ft (0.3m) up to triple overhead, like seen in those classic Red Bull expeditions. Lower to mid tides are preferable for good conditions, and it’s most fun when the wind is coming from the SouthWest. This place is geared more towards intermediate surfers due to some tricky sections, especially with strong rips coming off Point Carrew.

When you hit Graveyard, be aware of the constantly changing sandbars and the rocky patches nearby. It’s a good idea to keep an eye on local surfers to gauge the conditions and figure out where the best waves are that day. Just remember to keep your skills sharp, as the waves can come in powerful and unexpected.
