Overview
Graveyard is a sand-bottom left point tucked inside the estuary at Yakutat, the best-known surf zone in Southeast Alaska and nicknamed "The Far North Shore". Swells wrap around Point Carrew and clean up along shifting sandbars before reaching the break, and since the sand is in constant flux the setup keeps changing. It favours lefts with real power and the occasional barrel, plus a short, steep right on smaller days. It can handle serious size, too: a Red Bull expedition found triple-overhead waves running from the point down into the bay.
When It Works
The point draws swell from south through west (S-W), with southwest (SW) the best match. It's usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft and is moderately consistent, so it takes some patience but delivers when the setup lines up. Wrapping swell arrives smaller by the time it reaches Graveyard, but also cleaner.
Wind and Tide
Look for southwest (SW) offshore wind, which is what grooms the wrapping swell into shape. The break works on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call, and it prefers less water overall, especially on small swells.
Local Tips
Graveyard suits intermediate surfers, and the lineup stays fairly quiet, with a small local crew of around 30, many of whom get around by boat. Strong rips and a few rocky patches sit out on Point Carrew, so treat the outer stretch with respect.
