Graveyards (Taranaki) surf guide

Graveyards in Taranaki is a surf spot that attracts a decent number of surfers, especially on good days. You can park at the beach on Paora Road, and from there it’s just a short walk to the waves. The area is known for its boulders, which can make for a bit of a tricky entry and exit but offer some fun options in the water. On a good day, you can find some fun waves here, but it’s not always firing.

The main appeal at Graveyards comes from the left-hand point break which tends to be more consistent than the right. The best swell direction is from the southwest, with some north swell also working here. You can expect the spot to handle swell sizes of up to around 2 feet (0.6 meters) and it’s perfect for intermediate surfers looking to catch some waves. The optimal wind direction is from the southeast, and this spot works well at all tide heights, whether it’s low, mid, or high tide.

Keep in mind that the wave conditions can get a bit sectiony, so it may be hit or miss on the quality of the ride, especially compared to other more popular beaches nearby. While it can get crowded when it’s firing, you’ll often find more space to yourself when conditions are average. Just be prepared for the boulders and enjoy the adventure!
