Overview
Great Western is a cliff-lined cove and one of Newquay's town beaches, opening out at low tide into a large expanse of sand. It breaks over a sand bottom and is mostly a close-out, though occasional banks form when things line up. The spot rates below average overall, but on small days it makes for a fun, forgiving session.
When It Works
This beach break draws swell from west-southwest to west-northwest (WSW-WNW) and peels both right and left. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. Winter is the season, roughly December through February, and it comes into its own during big winter storms, when southwesterly winds ravage the other north coast breaks and Great Western still turns up a rideable wave.
Wind and Tide
Look for a south-southeast (SSE) offshore wind, with a workable wind window running from southeast to south (SE-S). It can break through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call, though the beach disappears as the tide pushes in.
Local Tips
Great Western suits beginners and intermediates, and it takes everything from shortboards and fish to funboards, longboards, and bodyboards. There's no real channel, so expect plenty of paddling. The lineup is usually fairly quiet and a touch reserved, though it can fill up during big winter storms and through summer.

Pay car parks sit a short walk from the beach, with parking close by in town.
