Overview
Gualala Rivermouth is a sand-bottom river mouth that throws both lefts and rights over sandbars shaped by rainfall and river flow. Because the bars depend on how the river is running, the setup shifts from one session to the next.
When It Works
The mouth draws swell from south to north (S-N) and is usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. Like the other North Coast rivers, it only comes together during the small swells of summer and early autumn, and even then it gets good on occasion rather than reliably.
Wind and Tide
Look for east (E) offshore wind to clean it up. It breaks on low and mid tide, with a rising tide the better call.
Access
The mouth is split down the middle by the Sonoma-Mendocino county line. For public access, head through Sonoma's Gualala Point Regional Park to reach the dune-backed beach. In the town of Gualala itself, the beach is only reachable through the adjacent restaurants and inns, so getting to the north side of the mouth can mean briefly explaining your plan to a maître d' or innkeeper while walking through with your board underarm.
