Gwithian is a cliff-lined beachbreak that stretches along golden sand just south of Godrevy. The currents here sculpt consistently good banks that throw up long lefts and rights and can hold a decent size, though as a more sheltered stretch it usually runs smaller than Godrevy. The banks shift a lot, so on any given day you might find excellent long walls or frustrating close-outs, and the waves tend to be more rippable than hollow. With miles of sand running south, there is plenty of room to spread out.
When It Works
The break draws swell from southwest through northwest, with west (W) swell the best match. It is usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, so it handles everything from small beginner days up to overhead waves. Gwithian works year round, but autumn is the golden window, with September through November delivering the best of it.
Wind and Tide
Look for southeast (SE) offshore wind. The bank breaks through low tide and mid tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call. As the tide pushes near high, swell bounces off the rocky headland and cliffs, which leaves the waves backwashy and makes getting in and out trickier.
Local Tips
This is a friendly spot for beginners, with space to find your own peak away from the pack. It suits a wide range of boards, from shortboards and fish to funboards and longboards. Expect a busy lineup when it is working, and the atmosphere can feel a little reserved.
Access
There is a car park with paid parking overlooking the beach. From there, walk north to the steps rather than taking the cliff scramble. A surf school and camping are nearby for anyone making a trip of it.
