Ham is a powerful left-hand point that breaks over a rock ledge and comes alive when storms send heavy surf its way. It can get seriously big here, as the wrecked harbour nearby will attest, and the ledge stays shallow in places, so it rewards commitment.
When It Works
Ham draws swell from the west through north (W-N), with northwest swell the best match. It really switches on in big northwest storm swells. The break is usable from 1.5 m / 5 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, so it needs plenty of size to start working. Consistency can be hit or miss, so it takes the right setup to line up.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southwest offshore wind, which pairs well with the stormy conditions that light this place up. It works best around mid tide, and holds through high tide too, with a rising tide generally the better call.
