Overview
Hammerhead is a reef break sitting off an offshore island, reachable by boat only. It peels both left and right over an uneven reef, and it stays offshore right through the summer, so the setup can line up nicely when the season delivers.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from south through southwest, and it really comes alive on a straight south swell, which it picks up easily. It's usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, giving you plenty of range from playful to solid. Consistency is moderate, so it won't fire every day, but there are worthwhile windows when the swell and setup come together.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest offshore wind to groom the reef. It can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers comfortable taking off over reef. Expect a fairly quiet lineup, so you'll often have space to find your rhythm out there.
Access
Getting here means going by boat, with surf charters running out from Nuevo Vallarta to reach this remote island break. Parking on the mainland side is restricted, so plan your launch accordingly.
