Hanga Nui is a reef break in the middle of a stunning bay, throwing out short lefts and longer rights that rarely close out. It is often blown out, but there are plenty of moai dotted around to marvel at while you wait for it to clean up.
When It Works
The reef picks up swell from northeast through east-southeast to south, breaking over uneven bottom. It is usable from 1.8 m / 6 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft and is moderately consistent, so you will find worthwhile windows even if it does not turn on every day.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest offshore wind to groom it. The reef can work through most of the tide, low, mid, and high, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a wave for experienced surfers. Expect a fairly quiet lineup when it is working.
Access
A small harbour sits alongside the break and eases the usual entry and exit problems.
