Hawks Nest Surf Forecast Guide

Hawks Nest is a long, sandy stretch of beach break peaks that keeps working through most of the year.

Overview

Hard-breaking, hollow peaks repeat along the 14 kilometres up to Little Gibber, which turns offshore in a north wind. On the south side of Winda Woppa Reserve sits Boulders, a top-shelf left-hand point that breaks down the rocks inside the entrance to Port Stephens. A humping southeast to south swell, any north wind and a pushing tide can line up there into the longest ride in New South Wales. Boulders is genuinely sharky, so walking back around after each ride beats paddling, even with the nasty rocks to negotiate.

When It Works

The banks pick up swell from northeast through southeast and serve up both lefts and rights over sand. It's usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, and it breaks reliably enough to be worth a regular check. The pick of it is a small to moderate northeast swell paired with light west wind, which is when the quality lefts turn up.

Wind and Tide

Look for west offshore wind to clean things up. The beach works through low, mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

The peaks are approachable enough for surfers still finding their feet, and with plenty of beach on offer there's room to spread out. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on.

Access

There's a car park with free parking, plus paid and roadside options depending on where you pull in. Restrooms and showers are on hand, camping is available nearby, and a lifeguard covers the beach. A surf school and surf shop round out the setup if you need a lesson or a last-minute bar of wax.
