Hermosa Beach is a stretch of sandy beach and pier peaks along the California coast, with rights and lefts breaking over the sand. Quality here leans heavily on what the sand is doing: it wants well-formed sandbars and a crossed-up combo swell to really fire, and closeouts are common when the setup isn't lining up. It's an honest, below-average beachbreak rather than a standout, but the peaks tend to spread out when it does turn on.
When It Works
The break works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, running anywhere from chest-high to double overhead. It draws swell from south-southwest to west, and the best days come on crossed-up combo swells landing on good sandbars. Sitting south of Manhattan, it's increasingly shadowed from summer south swell, so it comes into its own through autumn, winter, and spring, roughly October to April.
Wind and Tide
Look for east-northeast offshore wind, with a workable wind window running from north through east-northeast to southeast. It's best on mid to high tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is friendly water for beginners and intermediates, and it suits just about any craft, from shortboard, fish, and funboard to longboard, bodyboard, skimboard, or bodysurfing. The lineup stays fairly quiet and spread out, though the vibe can feel a little reserved. Sitting right beside the city, water quality can drop noticeably after rain, so it's worth timing sessions away from heavy runoff.
