Hideaway is a surf spot situated a 500m paddle from the resort’s sun-loungers. It’s a bit of a trek, but once you’re out there, you can catch some decent waves. The vibe is pretty laid-back and it attracts both locals and visiting surfers looking for a spot that’s a bit off the beaten path. Depending on the conditions, it can be a fun place to surf, especially when the wind and tide align just right.
The waves at Hideaway are known for breaking to the right over live coral, making it a right-hand reef break. It tends to handle swell sizes starting from about 2ft (0.6m) up to headhigh, but you really want to avoid pushing it too big. The optimal swell direction is southwest, though it can also handle southeast swells. Ideal conditions are when the wind is coming from the north, and the tide is around mid to high. Intermediates will need to be prepared for quick take-offs, as the wave can pinch and get a bit throaty when it gets headhigh or bigger.
Keep in mind that there are rips that scour the narrow channel, so be aware of your surroundings when paddling out. The southeast trades can really mess things up, blowing the waves to bits, so timing your sessions can make a big difference. Overall, it's a spot that can offer some fun rides for those at an intermediate level, but it can be tricky if the conditions aren’t right.
