Hideaways is a deceptively heavy left-hand reef break in the Mentawais, breaking over live coral. When it's on, it serves up a bendy bowl as perfect as any in the Ments: a sharp drop into a chamber, then speed through the next section before it shoulders off into a wall.
When It Works
The break draws swell from southwest through west, and west (W) swell is the best match, especially with decent period behind it. It's usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft and stays consistent.
Wind and Tide
Look for southeast (SE) offshore wind, though the wave isn't too fazed by the south devil wind. It works on mid and high tide, with a rising tide the better call. Steer clear at low tide, when the reef turns suicidally shallow.
Local Tips
This is an expert-only wave: the sharp drop, fast chamber, and shallow live coral leave little room for error. Less gung-ho surfers should head to Pirates, a much more accessible right nearby. As the Wave Park Losmen home break, expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working.
