Hideaways is a cluster of scattered reefbreaks tucked further east in Princeville, sitting at the base of high cliffs. It breaks over uneven reef and peels both left and right, holding fun waves when the surf is small and the wind stays down. It has had a shark attack, so it's worth keeping in the back of your mind.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from northwest through northeast, with northeast swell the best match. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft and is at its most fun on the smaller, cleaner days. Consistency is moderate, so count on worthwhile windows when the setup lines up rather than surf every day.
Wind and Tide
Look for southeast offshore wind to groom the reef. Hideaways sits more exposed to northeast wind than nearby Hanalei, so it tends to get bumped around sooner when that wind is up. It works on mid to high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The scattered, forgiving reefs make it a friendly option for beginners when it's small and glassy. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working.
