Higgins Beach surf guide

Higgins Beach is a surf spot located along a picturesque stretch of coastline, ideally suited for surfers looking for a range of wave conditions. It features a rocky ledge on the southwestern end and shallow waters at the Spurwink Rivermouth to the northwest. The tide fluctuates significantly here, averaging over 3 meters (10 feet) daily, which adds to the dynamic nature of the surf. The beach can get pretty crowded, especially during the summer months, so be prepared to share the waves with other surfers.

The surf at Higgins is known for its ability to handle decent swells, particularly optimal when a Southeast swell rolls in. It can showcase waves ranging from 1.2 meters (4 feet) to 4.6 meters (15 feet). With the right conditions, you can find some powerful and fun peaks breaking over a sandy bottom, though some rocky outcroppings are present. The beach offers mainly left and right waves, and it suits a range of surfing abilities from beginners to experts. Ideal wind direction is from the Northwest, and low to mid tides work best for catching waves. Just keep in mind that it can be hit or miss depending on the swell, so check the forecast before heading out.

Accessing the beach can be a bit tricky, especially in the summer when parking tends to cost $15 per day from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. If you plan to surf during those hours, you won’t be able to hit the water. There’s a municipal parking lot available and some limited street parking too. During winter, parking is free, and the crowds tend to thin out, but don’t forget your winter gear as the water can get freezing cold. Overall, Higgins Beach is a spot where you can enjoy a variety of surfing experiences throughout the year, especially during the autumn and winter seasons.

Forecast Cheat Sheet

Short on time? Focus on wave energy. It’s the best single metric to gauge how big and powerful the waves will be.

Click any table cell to jump to that forecast hour. The map will update with forecast arrows, so you can see if wind and swell direction are lining up.

Use the table sidebar to switch units for height and speed.

Log your surf sessions to compare forecasts with real sessions and sharpen future predictions.

On the map, click a metric label to bring that arrow to the front — handy when arrows overlap.

Models and Updates

Surfnerd blends multiple global and local wind and swell models using advanced interpolation and spatial techniques to create an "ensemble" forecast. Forecasts are refreshed hourly.

Surf Predictions

Our AI-driven algorithm scores surf quality, shown by green, orange, and gray dots. Each forecast hour is rated for wind, swell, and tide quality, then combined into an overall score. Here’s the scale:

Perfect
Good
Average
Bad or No Data

Session logs also feed the algorithm — the more you log, the smarter your forecasts get.

With Surfnerd, no more "you should have been here yesterday"

Wind certainty

Wind certainty tells you how much the weather models agree on the forecast.

  • High certainty: Models agree closely; forecast is reliable.
  • Medium certainty: Some disagreement; conditions may shift slightly.
  • Low certainty: Models diverge; treat forecast with caution.

We calculate this by comparing wind speed, gust and direction from multiple models (like GFS, ECMWF, Arome, and Harmonie) and seeing how closely they match. They are weighted, meaning that some models count more than others, depending on how good they are for a certain spot.
