Overview
Hog Hole is the outside point in a string of three quality right-hand point and reef breaks around Cabo Matapalo. As the most consistent break of the group, it throws up very steep, fast walls that peel over boulders. It gets wild and heavy when the swell is big, with a nasty inside mix of ledges, boulders and cobblestone, so it rewards surfers who know how to read a serious point.
When It Works
The point draws swell from south to west, and southwest (SW) is the best match. A straight west swell will still wrap in, just with less punch. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft and holds size well. Of the three points along this stretch, Hog Hole is the most consistent, so it is usually your best bet when you want waves in the area.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest (NW) offshore wind to groom those fast walls. The point favours low-to-mid tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call, though it can also work through mid and high.
Local Tips
This is an expert-level wave, best left to surfers who are comfortable in fast, powerful conditions over a rocky bottom. Expect a busy lineup when it works, with a regular crowd of locals and boaters coming across from Pavones.
Access
Getting here takes some effort. The 4x4 dirt roads into Cabo Matapalo are easily cut off by swollen rivers, and the accommodation options nearby are limited and expensive. Parking is restricted.
