Holy Island surf guide

Holy Island is a unique surf spot set on a small island surrounded by water. The access to the surf area involves a causeway road that can flood at high tide, so timing is key if you want to hit the waves. It’s a bit of a hidden gem and not too crowded, which can be a nice change from busier beaches. The vibe is pretty chill, making it a decent spot for surfers looking to escape the hustle.

The waves here can be decent, especially when there’s a big wrapping winter north swell. The spot has a few phantom reefs, with a left break on the south side of the island that can be fun when conditions are right. Holy Island handles swell sizes around 1 meter (3 ft), and can work with swells coming from the north and southeast. You can catch both left and right waves, and it’s best to surf during low to mid tide, especially since the reef and scattered rocks can be tricky. For optimal conditions, west winds are preferable here.

Aside from the waves, it’s important to be mindful of the causeway access road, which can flood during high tide, potentially making it hard to get in and out. Make sure to check tide schedules before heading out to avoid any surprises. There’s definitely some potential for fun sessions if you hit it right!
