Northumberland sits on England's far northeast, where a coast of long sandy bays and rockier headlands faces the North Sea and picks up swell from the north and northeast. This stretch works best when swell arrives from a northern to easterly angle and the wind blows offshore from the southwest through west, a combination that lines up most reliably through autumn and winter.
The coastline splits fairly neatly into two kinds of waves. Most of the region's breaks are beach breaks over sand, forgiving setups that handle a wide range of tides and suit surfers still finding their feet as well as intermediates looking for clean walls. Alongside them sit a handful of reef breaks over rock ledge, which need more size to switch on and reward stronger surfers when they do. That contrast gives the area genuine range: gentle bay surf on smaller days and heavier, more serious reef waves when a proper north swell fills in.
Surfing in Northumberland rewards a bit of local knowledge, since the best option shifts with swell size and direction. Notable spots include Alnmouth, Bamburgh, and Beadnell Bay, each a useful reference point along the coast. Beginner-friendly picks tend to be the sandy bays, where smaller swells around two to three feet are enough to get going and the wave stays manageable. The reefs are a different proposition, holding size well into double figures on the biggest days and best left to experienced surfers.
Swell direction is the main thing to watch. The coast is most exposed to swell from the north-northeast and northeast, with north, east, and southeast angles also feeding parts of the region. Because the prevailing offshore winds come from the southwest and west, classic conditions arrive when a northern swell meets a light westerly airflow. Tides are flexible here, with most spots working across high, mid, and low water, though the reefs tend to prefer more water on the bigger swells.
Seasonally, autumn and winter are the standout months, when North Sea depressions send through the cleaner, larger groundswells the reefs want and the beaches come alive. Water stays cold year-round on this coast, so a good winter wetsuit is essential for making the most of the best swells.
Boards follow the terrain. Fish, shortboards, and longboards all have their place, with longboards and fuller shapes ideal for the smaller beach days and shortboards coming into their own when the reefs turn on. SUP and bodyboards suit the mellower conditions too. Spread between towns like Seaton Valley, Alnmouth, Bamburgh, Berwick-upon-Tweed, and Blyth, the region packs a lot of variety into a relatively compact coastline.
