Holywell Bay Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Holywell Bay is a pretty, crescent-shaped, dune-backed beachbreak that makes a quieter alternative to Newquay. It's rarely surfed and fairly fickle: on its day it serves up fun sandbar lefts and rights, but it can just as easily close out down the beach. The southern fringe of the bay, marked by the twin Gull Rocks, cuts off a lot of swell, so it really comes alive when a larger swell is lighting up nearby breaks. When the river shapes the banks well, the sand can hold genuinely good waves.

When It Works

The bay draws swell from southwest to northwest (SW-NW), with west (W) swell the best match, breaking both left and right over a sandy bottom. It's usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, roughly thigh- to head-high, though it needs bigger, clean swells to show its best form. The season runs through autumn and winter, from September to February. It's inconsistent by nature, a bit of a roll of the dice, but there are worthwhile windows when everything lines up.

Wind and Tide

Look for southeast (SE) offshore wind. Holywell breaks through most of the tide, working on low and mid, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

The lineup stays quiet and can feel a little reserved, so it's rarely a scramble for waves. It suits beginners and intermediates, and the forgiving sand works for everything from shortboards and fish to funboards, longboards, and bodyboards. Take care as the swell builds: paddling is easy when it's small but gets rippy when it's bigger, with rip currents to watch on the larger days.

Access

Access is through a National Trust car park with paid parking, about a ten-minute walk from the beach through the village. Facilities include restrooms, camping, and lifeguard cover.
