Overview
Honolii Point is a consistent rivermouth break on the Big Islandโs east coast, just north of Hilo. Fast lefts and rights break over reef, boulders, and the river mouth, with a lefthander off the point on the north side that can be fun.
The waves can get hollow and powerful on a sizable swell and lower tide, but the fast walls are still described as manageable for intermediates.
When It Works
Honolii Point is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft. It is reliable on north to east swells, with northeast as the optimal swell direction.
Winter is the main season, when North Pacific swells are strongest, though it can break year-round. Hurricane swells can also be really good here.
Wind and Tide
The offshore wind direction is southwest, and it can get especially good when a solid north to northeast groundswell meets offshore Kona wind from the southwest.
Low to mid tide suits the spot, and a rising tide is better. Steady easterly trade winds and tradeswell are common through the year, so calm or non-trade wind windows are worth watching.
Local Tips
The paddle is fairly short, but currents can get bad at times, especially off the point. The river mouth affects conditions, and water quality can drop after heavy rain.
Crowds can get heavy when the swell is good. Humility and respect are appreciated in the lineup, which can feel a bit reserved.
Boards that fit the spot include shortboards, funboards, longboards, fish, SUPs, and bodyboards.
Access
Access is easy through Honoliโi Beach Park, with a car park, restrooms, and showers. The beach has black sand, rocks, and shade trees.
Watch for reef, moving rocks and boulders, and water quality after heavy rain.
