Hornsea Surf Forecast Guide

Hornsea is a long sand beach with high-tide shingle, running south toward Withernsea and broken up by groynes and rocky sea defences. It is not a classic, but banks form around the groynes and a clean groundswell can throw up long, walling lefts. Rights break here too.

When It Works

The beach draws swell from north-northeast to northeast (NNE-NE) and is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. It is at its best around the groyne banks at lower tides, in smaller, clean northerly or northeasterly swells, when lefts can peel down the beach in long walls. Autumn and winter are the main seasons. When the size picks up, watch the longshore drift closely: pick a line-up, keep it in view, and treat the rips and groynes with respect, as it can be merciless.

Wind and Tide

Look for west-southwest (WSW) offshore wind, with a workable window running from southwest to west (SW-W). The banks come to life on low to mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

Hornsea suits beginners and intermediates and takes a range of boards, from shortboards and fish to funboards and longboards. The lineup stays quiet and can feel a little reserved. Water quality is usually fine, though it can be affected by sewage after heavy rain.

Access

There is a car park by the boat slipway.
