Horseshoe Bay is a right-hand point that breaks over a mix of boulders and sand, set beside the long beach at Hick's Bay. It's a fairly modest wave overall, but the point comes into its own on bigger days, when a swell maxes out the neighbouring beachbreak and the right-hander starts to switch on.
When It Works
The point draws swell from northeast to east (NE-E), with east (E) the best direction. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.1 m / 7 ft, favouring the larger end of that window when the adjacent beachbreak is overpowered. Consistency is moderate, so expect worthwhile windows rather than waves on tap.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southwest (SW) offshore wind, which happens to be the dominant direction here. It breaks on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The right-hander suits intermediate surfers. The lineup stays fairly quiet, so you shouldn't have to jostle for your share of waves.
