Hosta is the main surf break on North Uist, a northwest-facing beach break that peels over sand. It is usually small and soft, but line up the right swell and it can really fire. If it is not doing much, plenty of nearby bays are worth a check for small but consistent surf.
When It Works
The bank throws both lefts and rights and picks up swell from southwest through north (SW-N), with a northwest swell the best match. It is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, and being moderately consistent, it delivers rideable days fairly often without turning on every session.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southeast offshore wind to clean it up. Hosta can work through most of the tide, from low to high, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Those small, forgiving waves make Hosta a friendly spot for beginners. Expect a quiet lineup when you paddle out.
