Overview
Hotel Mae is a sand-bottomed beachbreak around the cape on the southern tip of the island, sitting right in front of the Iwasaki Hotel. It serves up both lefts and rights, and the lefthander on the left side of the beach is the pick of the bunch, holding together more reliably than anything else here.
When It Works
The beach draws swell from southwest through southeast, with southeast the best match. Any south swell will light up that left, so keep an eye out for anything with south in it. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.5 m / 5 ft. Consistency is moderate, and the spot has waves on offer year-round, so there's usually something to check.
Wind and Tide
Look for north offshore wind to clean things up. All stages of the tide can produce, though a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
The waves here are friendly enough for beginners, which is part of why the beach draws a busy lineup. Watch for the rip that usually runs along the left side of the beach, especially if you're paddling out to that lefthander.
