Hultin's Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Hultin's is a right-hander that breaks well outside Laniakea, sitting just west of the top of Jocko's and east of the regular Laniakea takeoff zone. On northerly angled swells it links up with Laniakea proper, essentially a further-out takeoff on the same stretch of North Shore reef. The wave peels right over a bottom of lava, rock, and coral, and getting out there means a very long paddle both ways.

When It Works

The setup lights up on swell from northwest to north-northwest and needs size to show itself, working from 1.8 m / 6 ft to 4.3 m / 14 ft. Expect overhead to well-overhead faces when it's on. It's a decent wave that comes alive mainly through autumn, winter, and spring, with winter the prime window.

Wind and Tide

Cleanest conditions come with east-southeast offshore wind, though there's a workable wind window running from east-northeast to south-southeast. It breaks across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is an intermediate-to-expert wave, best met on a shortboard or a gun once it gets big. The lineup stays fairly quiet with a neutral vibe, so a bit of humility and respect goes a long way. Keep the hazards in mind: shallow reef, long hold-downs, sharks, strong currents, and swinger sets that can close out the lineup.

Access

Park in the dirt lot on the inland side of Kam Highway, just across from Laniakea beach. From there it's a long paddle out to the peak and back.
