Overview
Hunts Bay is a rare reef break that peels both left and right over an uneven reef. It only shows its potential when a solid swell is running.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from southwest to west (SW-W), with southwest (SW) the best direction. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft and really needs a solid swell before it starts breaking. Consistency is on the lower side, so it pays to time your session for when the swell lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind, and steer clear when there's any west in the wind, since it blows out easily. It breaks through mid to high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits confident intermediate surfers rather than beginners. Expect a fairly quiet lineup when it's working.
Access
Head to Southgate village and walk south to reach the break. Access is tricky thanks to the rocks, so take care on the way in and out. There's free roadside parking around Southgate.
