Overview
Iioka is a sand-bottom beach break where jetties and breakwalls running parallel to the shore carve out sandbars and channels in most conditions. It peels both left and right, and the banks come to life once a bit of swell fills in.
When It Works
The beach draws swell from the southwest through southeast (SW-SE), with southeast (SE) the best match. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft and needs some south in the swell to get going. Consistency is moderate, so expect worthwhile windows rather than surf on tap.
Wind and Tide
Look for a north (N) offshore wind to clean it up, which is what the break really wants to hold its shape. It can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide the better call.
Local Tips
This is a beginner's playground, and it fills up fast, especially on weekends when the surf schools arrive in big packs. Expect a busy lineup when it's on. Neighbouring Shinto Shita and Paipu Shita just to the west pull the bulk of the crowd driving in from Tokyo. Water quality around here can be questionable, so keep that in mind.
Access
There's a car park with free parking plus roadside spots nearby. On the beach you'll find restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, a surf school, and a surf shop.
