Ikuragahama is a fun, easygoing beachbreak on the coast heading toward Miyazaki, the prefecture's largest city. The peaks break over sand and peel both left and right, with the best waves forming around the rivermouth, where you might come across the odd rock. It's a relaxed spot rather than a demanding one, part of a long run of similar breaks stretching south toward the city.
When It Works
The break draws swell from east through south, with southeast (SE) swell the best match. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, giving you a decent window of size to play with. Consistency is moderate, so it pays to catch it when the swell lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest (NW) offshore wind to clean up the faces. It can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
With its gentle, forgiving waves, Ikuragahama is a good pick for beginners. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working.
