Ilbarritz is better known for golf and dining out, but it also hides a couple of beaches that can turn out good waves, even if the reefs here don't look all that appealing. The wave breaks over a mix of uneven reef and sand and peels both left and right. On a dropping tide, the scattered rocks can help set up a corner to ride, though more often the wave stays ill-defined and folds into a mushy closeout.
When It Works
Ilbarritz draws swell from west through north (W-N), with northwest (NW) the direction that lines it up best. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, and as a consistent spot it turns on regularly whenever the swell sits in that window.
Wind and Tide
Look for southeast (SE) offshore wind to clean up the faces. The beach works on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an approachable, beginner-friendly wave. Expect a busy lineup when it's working, so be ready to share the peaks.
Access
There are heaps of rocks to watch out for here, so pick your spot carefully. On land you'll find restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, and a surf school, plus a car park with free parking and roadside parking.
